Urgent Appeal: Support Treasure Beach, Jamaica in the Wake of Hurricane Beryl
The community of Treasure Beach, Jamaica, has been devastated by Hurricane Beryl. Homes have been destroyed, families displaced, and the livelihoods of many have been severely affected. In the face of this disaster, the Thompson Legacy Foundation has partnered with the Treasure Beach Women’s Group to deliver life-saving relief to the most vulnerable.
Founded in response to the catastrophic damage caused by Hurricane Dorian, the Thompson Legacy Foundation is no stranger to the challenges of rebuilding after natural disasters. In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, the Foundation made a monetary donation to the Treasure Beach Women’s Group to help families begin their recovery.
The Role of the Treasure Beach Women’s Group
For many years, the Treasure Beach Women’s Group has served as a cornerstone of the local community, offering critical support to families through programs that uplift women. In times of crisis, it is often women who shoulder the burden of protecting and providing for their families. The Women’s Group has always understood this, focusing on women as the driving force for family well-being and community resilience.
In response to Hurricane Beryl, the Women’s Group, empowered by an initial donation from the Thompson Legacy Foundation, has acted swiftly. They have distributed food, clothing, and essential household items to families who have lost everything. They are also providing back-to-school supplies to ensure that children can return to their education as quickly as possible. This work has provided a critical lifeline, but more is needed.
The Growing Challenge of Climate Change
Hurricane Beryl, an unprecedented storm in terms of strength (category four) and timing (early July), is a stark reminder that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and more destructive. As climate change accelerates, communities like Treasure Beach—small, resource-limited, and often overlooked—are increasingly vulnerable. These communities are frequently ill-equipped to withstand the rising tide of severe weather events, yet they are among those most impacted.
The situation in Treasure Beach underscores the urgent need for sustained support. The Thompson Legacy Foundation, together with the Treasure Beach Women's Group, is doing all it can to ensure that families receive the assistance they desperately need. But with the threat of future storms looming, the need for resources is growing.
How You Can Help
The children and families of Treasure Beach need your help. Your donation can provide them with the essentials to recover and rebuild their lives. Every contribution will go directly towards providing food, shelter, and support for children to continue their education, even in these most challenging times.
By donating to the Thompson Legacy Foundation today, you are not only helping Treasure Beach recover from the devastation of Hurricane Beryl, but you are also making an investment in the future of children and families. You are helping to build resilience in the face of a growing climate crisis.
